1. Moulding the Clay:

Margaret begins by wedging and preparing the clay, moulding it skillfully in her hands to attain the desired form.

2. Shaping with Plaster Moulds:

Using plaster molds, she refines and shapes the porcelain, each movement guided by years of expertise.

3. Drying and Refinement:

The formed porcelain is left to dry for several days, undergoing meticulous sanding and smoothing to ensure a flawless finish.

4. Biscuit Firing:

The bowls undergo their first firing in the kiln, strengthening the material and setting the groundwork for the subsequent stages.

5. Glazing:

Once fired, the porcelain bowls are meticulously glazed, each stroke adding depth and character to the piece.

6. Gold Lustre Decoration:

A meticulous process follows as Margaret delicately paints on gold lustre for stunning decoration, adding a touch of opulence to the pieces.

7. The “gold” firing

The bowls are then fired for a third time to ensure the gold decoration is made permanent. The glazed bowls are then fired again to a higher temperature over a day. Once the kiln has cooled completely, the bowls can be removed from the kiln and gold lustre painted on for decoration.

8. The Final Firing

The bowls are then fired again, ensuring the permanence of the gold decoration, a testament to Margaret’s attention to detail.

Nerve-wracking wait

Margaret shares that the final reveal after the kiln has cooled is both thrilling and nerve-wracking. The fragility of porcelain means that each firing is a moment of trepidation, hoping that the delicate pieces emerge unscathed.

“Once the kiln has cooled completely, I can unload the kiln and view the results. It’s always a moment of trepidation as the fragile porcelain can distort or crack during the firing process. It’s quite a relief when things go according to plan!”
